Fall season, in my eyes is the best time to fish Shasta Lake, California, for many reasons. Fall is the off-season and that means lower off-season rates on houseboats and less people on the water. Cooler temperatures make it more enjoyable and the fishing this time of year is the best you'll get anywhere in California. You see, the trout and salmon are still stacked up in the thermocline feeding heavily on the large population of shad that help them to grow to 4 and 5 pounds. They feed heavily this time of year bulking up for the less active winter months. Fishing in 40 to 100 feet of water can be challenging and can require special equipment. In line divers, like the pink lady or deep six, lead core line and downriggers will do the job. If you get there, you'll catch the fish and a lot of them, it's that simple.
This time of year the trout average 18" and often weigh a healthy 3 pounds, but there are a lot of 4 to 5 pounders available as well. 20 to 30 fish days are common this time of year and believe me, that means a lot of rod bending, line ripping excitement! Most shad imitations will work this time of year but my favorites are the Sling Blade Dodger trailing a Cripplure or Hum Dinger three feet back. The most productive colors in deep water are purple, blue and green. The main body of the lake is generally your best bet. Try trolling the Sacramento Arm from Gooseneck to Toupee Island. For best results locate your shad schools and work them, I guarantee plenty of action! Remember location, depth, lure and color with a good presentation will always produce. Good fishing, good luck and keep a tight line.
